Iqra ', commonly translated by "Read", is the first word of the revelation delivered by God to the Prophet Muhammad. Of course this is surprising for the Prophet, because he is an illiterate. What to read?, "Ma Aqra?", Such the question of the Prophet after repeatedly Gabriel conveyed the command. We also did not find an explanation of what objects must be read from the word iqra ', therefore there are various opinions of interpreters.
The word Iqra 'comes from the word Qara'a, in the dictionaries, this word has a variety of meanings, including reading, analyzing, exploring, reflecting on, conveying, researching and so forth. Thus the order of iqra 'or "read" does not require a writing that can be read, nor does it require a greeting that can be played. This understanding is in accordance with the meaning of the word qara'a itself which initially did have the meaning of "gathering".
The Qur'an often uses the word Qara'a in various verses. Sometimes it concerns "reading" sourced from God or the Scriptures (for example: QS 17:45), but sometimes it also involves "reading" sourced from humans or not from God (for example: QS 17:14). By looking at this evidence coupled with the absence of an explanation of what are the objects that accompany it, it can be understood if the word iqra 'is considered to have a broad meaning and general.
It can be concluded, that Iqra 'which means reading, analyzing, exploring, reflecting on, conveying, researching and others, including any object that can be reached by the word. Whether it's "reading" the verses sourced from God (Scriptures) also "read" human work such as books and newspapers. Including here is to examine, analyze and reflect on the universe, the dynamics of society and self. Examples such as enjoying poetry or reading magazines, solving office problems or RTs, teaching or doing homework are the implementation of the simplest IQRA commands.
With the extent of the scope of the word iqra ', can each of our breaths be considered as implementing Iqra's commands', of course not!. Because the word iqra is' associated with the phrase "bi ismi rabbika" (with the name of your Lord). This means that the meaning of Iqra 'is not just the origin of reading, but at the same time also requires the culprit to be very clever in choosing objects that are read, examined, analyzed and contemplated can deliver it to the "name of God". In other words it can be said that we are also required to choose the object of the Iqra 'command precisely and must be about goodness and things that are useful, not about bad.
Iqra 'was the first guidance given by Allah SWT to humans, the only creature that was awarded for scientific potential, potential that was not possessed by angels. The higher the "reading", the more open the secrets of nature and the more developing science. It is no exaggeration to say that Iqra 'is the main requirement to build civilization. Iqra 'is not only addressed to the Prophet Muhammad, but also for all humanity of all time. Because the realization of Iqra's orders' is the gateway to the happiness of life in the world and the hereafter.
