Marawis and Tambourine for Qosidahan

Marawis is one type of "pat" with percussion as its main musical instrument. This music is a collaboration between Middle East and Betawi arts, and has a thick religious element. That is reflected in the various song lyrics that are sung which is a praise and love for the Creator.

Marawis art originated from Middle Eastern countries, especially from Yemen. The name Marawis is taken from the name of one of the musical instruments used in this art. Overall, this music uses Hajir (large drum) 45 cm in diameter with a height of 60-70 cm, marawis (small drum) of 20 cm in diameter with a height of 19 cm, dumbuk or (jimbe) (a type of drum shaped like a cormorant, has a different diameter on both sides), and two pieces of round wood of ten centimeters. Sometimes percussion is equipped with a tamborin or krecekdan [symbbal] which is small in diameter. Songs that are rhythmic gambus or desert are sung while accompanied by certain types of blows

In the Regional Music Week catalog, DKI Culture Office, 1997, there are three types of blows or tones, namely Zapin, Sarah, and Zahefah. Zapin's punch accompanied the happy songs at the stage on the stage, such as the song reciprocated pantun. Zapin's tone is a tone that is often used to accompany the songs of praise to the Prophet Muhammad (prayers). Tempo Zafin's tone is slower and not too stomping, so many are also used in accompanying Malay songs.

Sarah's blow was used to paraded the bride. While Zahefah accompanied the song in Majlis. Both of these tones are more widely used for stomping rhythms and encouraging. In the marawis the term ngepang is also known which means to be revealed to hit and raise. In addition to accompanying celebration events such as circumcision and wedding parties, Marawis is also often performed in Islamic arts-cultural events.
